KISS AND CRY exhibition: A personal glimpse behind the scenes of figure skating
Des corridors nus, une salle sans fioriture entre coulisses et la porte qui accède directement à la glace de l’autre côté.
Bare corridors, a plain room between the dressing rooms and the door leading directly onto the ice rink on the other side.
Un lieu de connivence, de derniers conseils, de chaleur, de retrouvailles après le concours entre athlètes et entraîneurs, d’échauffement, un lieu d’espoir, de désillusions, de joies, de peines, d’émotions intenses.
A place of camaraderie, of last-minute advice, of warmth, of post-competition reunions between athletes and coaches, of warm-ups; a place of hope, of disappointment, of joy, of sorrow, of intense emotions.
Quatre années intenses ont été déployées par chaque athlète pour atteindre cet objectif, participer aux Jeux Olympiques.
Each athlete has put in four intense years of work to achieve this goal: to compete in the Olympic Games.
J’étais seul photographe, accrédité CIO, à pouvoir oeuvrer au sein de cet espace préservé, en totale discrétion et confiance envers les athlètes. Je le faisais d’instinct de nombreuses soirées après mes journées à photographier compétitions et autres coulisses autour des pistes, des stades de neige, en forêt, sur et sous le tremplin de saut, au départ de la fameuse descente d’Albertville, ancrésous le ponton TV du départ de cette piste glacée à la pente impressionnante, crampons aux chaussures durant des heures. Situation impossible pour la sécurité mais finalement accordée après une longue négociation, des choix privilégiés par ma passion du sport et de ce monde de partage.
I was the only IOC-accredited photographer allowed to work within this restricted area, in complete discretion and with the athletes’ full trust. I did this instinctively on many evenings after my days spent photographing competitions and other behind-the-scenes moments around the slopes, in the snow stadiums, in the forest, on and beneath the ski jump, at the start of the famous Albertville downhill run, perched beneath the TV platform at the start of that icy run with its impressive gradient, with crampons on my boots for hours on end. It was an impossible situation from a safety perspective, but permission was eventually granted after lengthy negotiations – choices driven by my passion for sport and this world of shared experience.
Concernant ce travail dans les coulisses du patinage artistique, le directeur du Musée Olympique Jean-François Pahud a souhaité présenter cette collection, en partie, exceptionnelle au coeur des JO avec des tirages barytés qui sont conservés et préservés dans les collections du Musée olympique. L’exposition Kiss and Cry a été exposée au Musée olympique du 27 janvier au 10 avril 1994, puis à la maison des sports d’Albertville durant une année et à d’autres occasions.
With regard to this behind-the-scenes work in figure skating, Jean-François Pahud, Director of the Olympic Museum, wished to showcase this collection – which is, in part, exceptional in its focus on the Olympic Games – through baryta prints that are held and preserved in the Olympic Museum’s collections. The ‘Kiss and Cry’ exhibition was on display at the Olympic Museum from 27 January to 10 April 1994, then at the Maison des Sports in Albertville for a year and on other occasions.
Depuis lors la Télévision a pris possession des lieux ainsi nommés Kiss and Cry et diffuse en direct l’intimité des athlètes.
Since then, television crews have taken over the area known as the ‘Kiss and Cry’ and are broadcasting the athletes’ private moments live.
