trois étapes réalisées à ce jour 1982, 1984, 2010
En introduction une série de photographies que j’ai prises en 1984, une femme ramasse le foin fauché à la main dans la pente impressionnante du Val d’Hérens à plus de mille mètres d’altitude. Cette femme à l’instar des autres dans le canton à cette époque portait encore en habit de travail le costume traditionnel, avec des gestes si élégants et parée d’une coiffe royale en cette nature si extraordinaire, D’où mon titre admiratif et respectueux, Valais des reines.
To begin with, here is a series of photographs I took in 1984, showing a woman gathering hay that had been mown by hand on the steep slopes of the Val d’Hérens, at an altitude of over a thousand metres. Like other women in the canton at that time, she still wore the traditional costume as her work attire, her movements so graceful and her head adorned with a regal headdress amidst such extraordinary natural surroundings. Hence my admiring and respectful title, ‘Valais of the Queens’.

Le caractère et cette symbiose des vaches d’Hérens en phase avec un décor alpin sublime, tout aussi âpre, se déssine ici, au coeur des Alpes suisses, dans le canton du Valais, des vaches exceptionnelles, celles de la race d’Hérens pouvant peser plus de cinq cent kilos se combattent et luttent pour déterminer la hiérarchies du troupeau à l’alpage. Depuis des lustres ces combats dans la montagne ou la plaine attirent la foule.
The character and unique harmony of the Hérens cattle, set against a sublime yet rugged Alpine backdrop, come to life here in the heart of the Swiss Alps, in the canton of Valais. These exceptional animals – the Hérens breed, which can weigh over five hundred kilos – battle and wrestle to establish the hierarchy within the herd on the mountain pastures. For ages, these contests in the mountains or on the plains have drawn crowds.
Occasion propice pour les Valaisans de se plonger en leurs racines autour des éleveurs, propriétaires er rabateurs. Les passionnés et curieux de ces joutes se comptent par milliers et dégustent cette authenticité purement valaisanne, accompagnée de crus locaux, vins blancs et raclette ou d’une assiette faite maison sur les genoux.
La tension ne faiblit pas jusqu’à l’ultime combat qui désigne la Reine du jour toutes catégories confondues.
This is the perfect opportunity for the people of Valais to reconnect with their roots alongside the breeders, owners and herders. Thousands of enthusiasts and curious onlookers flock to these contests to savour this purely Valaisan authenticity, accompanied by local wines – white wines and raclette – or a homemade dish eaten on their laps.
The tension remains high right up to the final contest, which crowns the Queen of the Day across all categories.
